Promoting Numeracy

Image of numbers for Maths page - Watlington Primary SchoolThe teaching of Mathematics has changed a great deal since most of us were at school. Children are taught a wider range of mental calculation strategies and are encouraged to use these as appropriate throughout their school careers.

Standard written methods are still taught, not as a rigid procedure to be followed, but as a way of recording in a quick and efficient way, and are only taught once understanding of the calculation process is secure.

Many parents are concerned that their children are not doing “proper sums” and others are concerned that they will show their children the “wrong way” of solving a problem when helping with homework. We have produced a leaflet that will hopefully explain some of the steps in teaching calculations and also show the format of written calculations we teach at Watlington.
