Home School Partnership
Parents as Partners
We welcome any offers of help from parents.
Some parents work alongside teachers and learning support assistants. They are asked to be flexible in their approach to what they do. We really value the support and expertise parents bring into school.

I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there
The clay they used was a young child’s mind
And they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher;
The tools she used were books, music and art.
One a parent,
With a guiding hand, and a gentle, loving heart
Day after day the teacher toiled
With a touch that was loving and sure;
Whilst the parent laboured by his side
And polished and smoothed it o’er.
And when at last their task was done,
They were proud of what they had wrought
For the things they had moulded into the child
Could neither be sold or bought
And each agreed he would have failed,
If he had worked alone
For behind the parent stood the school,
And behind the teacher
The home.         Anon.

Communication

We aim to be open and responsive to parents and the community we serve. Our first priority is to communicate effectively with parents on a day-to-day basis in a friendly yet professional manner. On the whiteboard outside every classroom teachers indicate what is being taught that week so that parents are fully informed. It is school policy that all the teachers are available on the playground after school to engage with parents. All of the children in our school have a home school diary and we encourage parents and teachers to communicate through this book on a regular basis. Every Wednesday, we produce a parent newsletter detailing events and information we think parents might find useful and informative. Back issues are kept in the reception area, which means that parents who have rifled through school bags and still have not found a copy can see what they have missed! We contribute to The Watlington Times on a monthly basis so that the local community knows what is going on in our school and how they can be part of it. We have established close links with other local newspapers.

Parents and relatives are welcome to attend Friday family afternoon assemblies. Each assembly has a subject focus. Children have the opportunity to talk to a large audience and communicate the work they have been doing.

Subject co-ordinators and other teaching staff have an opportunity to see what is going on in a particular subject area and parents have the chance to see the continuity and progression throughout the school. During these assemblies we celebrate achievement and congratulate any child who has made progress, completed a significant piece of work or been kind, thoughtful or helpful during the week. In the autumn term, we hold an open morning so that friends and relatives can see where and how the children are working.

We hold a formal parent-teacher meeting in the first half term and a more informal meeting in the second term. We provide a written report at the end of the summer term and parents are given the opportunity to discuss the contents of the report before the child moves into the next year group.
