Literacy
Our aim is to give the children a love of books and a thirst for reading.
The children have a daily Literacy lesson and sometimes this is extended to ensure there are opportunities for extended writing practice. Within the English curriculum, children are taught to:
Use a range of reading strategies to decode a text.
Spell using patterns within words.
Write independently and use a joined script when appropriate.
There are opportunities for the children to engage in role-play activities throughout the school. They regularly talk about what they have learnt in our "Friday Family Assembly" when we invite parents and friends to see what the children have learnt.
We invite professional authors, illustrators and theatre companies to work in school to supplement and enrich the English curriculum. These activities help to develop speaking and listening skills. KS1 and KS2 pupils are taught to appreciate literature through drama, which is taught by a subject specialist.
