Citizenship
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is more than a statutory subject because it pervades all we do in school. We have a school council, which meets every two weeks in term time and makes recommendations to the senior management team. The Head Teacher invites small groups of children to 'Friday tea' on weekly rota. They are invited to discuss what is going well and how things can be improved. In this way, we try to ensure that children fully participate in the decision-making processes within school.
Older children are given responsibility through our duty group and "buddying" systems. Problems are sorted out in circle times when the children have the opportunity to discuss issues and problems relevant to them. In all that we do, we try to act as positive role models as teachers do. We want to create in our school a society, "where people matter more than things," (Archbishop Desmond Tutu) and we believe "it is only when you know how to be a citizen of your own country that you can be a citizen of the world."
